Simple Parenting

My favorite items and tips to make parenting simple. Bring it back to the old days in the shade. Our houses weren't overrun with artificially dyed foods and toys, plastics and microwaves, and we were better off for it. I feel that our children can benefit from that lifestyle and it also helps ease the second-to-second rush that rule our lives. These are a few of my favorite products for baby #2.

1. Read more. Of course there are some parenting styles or practices even in the best books, that just won't gel with yours. So pick the ones that work, and leave the rest. Never feel that there is one "right" way to do anything, let alone parent a child. It is a constant journey of self discovery and trial-and-error, but just the fact that you are seeking ways to improve on parenting, shows how much you care about the development and well-being of your child. Kudos! Some great books on simple parenting: Trees Make the Best Mobiles and The Happiest Baby on the Block

2. Learn what your baby needs: A great system for this is the Dunstan Baby Language System. It teaches how to understand the five cries your baby uses to tell you what they need. This is the most amazing discovery EVER and it truly helps eliminate frustration especially in those early months when you and baby are still getting to know one another.
Dunstan Baby Language -- Learn the universal language of newborn babies

3. Music-Rockabye Baby: I was thoughtfully given this as a gift when we first found out we were pregnant, by one of our really good couple-friends. MY husband is in a band (The Mission Veo) so it goes without mention that we are rather interested in music. This lovely couple purchased the compilation CD of instrumental versions of favorite rock songs. It is beautifully orchestrated so that baby will be soothed into slumber, and also fun for adults to try and guess which band is being covered. There are many of these CD's where each one is devoted entirely to the songs of one band, and thus your baby can jam out to the gentle tunes of Nirvana, U2, Pink Floyd, or my favorite- The Cure. Nobody wants a baby with poor music taste, so let your kids get ahead of the peer group.

Rockabye Baby! Good Day, Goodnight: The 5 Year Anniversary Compilation

4. Moby Baby Wrap/ Baby K'tan: Wearing your baby has more benefits than one would think.
According to Dr. Sears, babies who are  "worn" are smarter, more attached, less fussy and learn human interactions better than those who are not.
While baby-wearing has gained popularity in Western cultures recently, it is an age old tradition in many areas of the world. I grew up in South Africa, where it is customary for the black women to strap their babies onto their back whilst they work or go about their business. We had a cleaning lady/nanny who was like a second mom to me, and I remember being very young and being strapped to her back, abd how soothing it was to hear her singing and the vibrations her voice made. I would fall asleep to the constant rocking motion.  Some more information on baby-wearing around the world: (Courtesy of www.slingbabies.co.nz)
  • For instance Mexican people use the Rebozo, which is a square of woven cloth tied over one shoulder with baby usually on the back- sometimes called a Chal, depending on the length.
  • Peruvians have a Manta which sits over both shoulders like a cape, and baby sits high on mother's back.
  • Guatemalans use Parraje- similar to a Rebozo.
  • European mothers used a mixture of pouches, wraps and short cloth carriers.
  • Alaskan/Canadian people have the Amauti which is a very thick arctic jacket with a baby 'pocket' in the back, baby even fits under the over-sized hood!
  • Papua New Guinea mothers use a Bilum- a net bag held at the forehead with baby hanging at the back (very strong necks!)
  • Indonesian mothers use a Selendang which is a long ornate wrap.
  • Aboriginal mothers used to keep their babies in carriers made of bark, similar to the cradleboards used by Native Americans but without the cloth covering.
  • Asian mothers use a variety of carriers including Mei-tai /Hmong/ Bei(China), Onbuhimo (Japan), Podaegi (Korea) plus many use a 'carrier' of long straps which go under baby's armpits and thighs for back carries.
  • African mothers use a 'Khanga' which is a short-ish piece of cloth tied around the torso, so baby sits low on the back.
My two favorite baby wearing slings are: The Moby wrap

And the K'tan: $49.99-59.99.

I would love to hear what your favorite baby products are, so send me an email, or post a comment.
And keep your parenting as simple as possible!

Little bit of Lana in my life

The lovely Lana Del Rey , that is.

Staying true to the resurgence of the 60s pop era, Del Rey delivers sultry, dramatic melodies that rope you in with the enchanting, sometimes disturbing and sad lyrics. The 60s she embodies is not that of the "stepford" wife and hamburger joints, but more the gritty, acid-laced, "factory girl" under side. This album, Born to die,  which dropped Jan 31st, seems a social commentary of the "all-American" ways (songs like :Blue jeans, Elvis, Video games, etc) and speaks to issues of press, status, sex, marriage, and whatever else her label allowed her to sing about (albeit with  rather depressive outlooks), showcasing glamour and love as being more barbituate, than "Barbie". It's not really child-appropriate listening unless you don't mind your toddler belting out "we were born to die" in her sunday school class.

It would appear that Lana is an overnight success, but in reality she has been performing under the name Lizzie Grant and other side projects for a few years now. Seen here:
performing in 2009 (pre lip-enhancement).While her talent was apparent, her new label felt the need to do a complete overhaul, sprinkle some illuminati symbolism into her videos and even a name change and hence reborn the sultry, Lana Del Rey.

While I'm not thrilled about the power houses using artists as tools for their own means(See MK Ultra),or her SNL flop, and that her authenticity is questionable, her songs are still both intriguing and meloncholy- exactly as they intended, so I guess just listen with caution. ;)

Sounds Like : Stevie Nicks, Lykke Li

Guess, is the word, it's got mood, it's got meaning.

I must confess.... I have been feening for shopping for the month of October. Especially considering that this is my favorite fashion season- fall and early winter. All the clothes and shoes are deep hues, jewel tones, and shiny patent leathers, with studded glory! Lots of layers and textures, and bows.
So, one of the first things I did was take a look at my favorite (Guess), and I am in love with their campaign: A  nostalgic 60s throwback, to big hair and bigger eyes coupled with tight clothes in even tighter bodies. Here are some of my favorites!

Platform Shoes (I'm only 5 '3 so usually don't o t at night without some extra height)

Rockin' babies

Maybe it's because my husband is in a band, or maybe it's because I think rockstars are hotter than normal people ( again, because my husband is in a band :) ), but I adore wee-sized rock attire. Neither of us are huge sports fanatics (gasp!) as we both tend to lean towards the more artistic aspects in life, so it probably stands to reason that "Mommy's little line-backer" would not be my first choice of clothing to dress my baby in. Here are some of the rock wardrobe my baby has acquired already.

Gymboree blazer
Sex Pistol's Shirt (A friend bought this  in NY for us, but I found them online here too)

Gymboree baby blazer (looks super cute with those tie onesies)
Children's place hat (just like daddy's- my husband has so many of this style hat, they are going to look like peas in a pod).

Then of course, there are the amazing Rockabye baby CD's, which I mentioned in an earlier post. They are amazing lullaby renditions of your favorite bands.

And finally, to keep his feet clean on stage, some Silly Souls Rockstar Shoes.
Silly Souls Rock Star 4-Piece Baby Gift Set, Black, 3-6 Months
Soon, I'll be able to post some pictures of my little guy in all his rock gear. :)

Book Club Besties

This year, I pledged to read more books. Thus far I have succeeded and read about a book a week, sometimes two. It has been fabulous, and in the process of course I have stumbled upon some fantastic stories. The following books are some that I think offer a lot of discussion-worthy topics and interesting character layers to dissect. They are perfect for book clubs, or if you happen to read one of them, drop me a line and let me know what you thought.

Amazon.com $17
1. The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender

Synopsis: A young girl finds that she has a peculiar gift, to tell the exact emotions the preparer of food has in their soul at the time of preparation. IT creates problems for her as she realizes most of it is unhappy and she can't bear to eat anything but factory packaged "soulless" foods.

Review: The author captures such a melancholy feeling throughout the book. I adore the choppy but vivid interactions and descriptions. Such an amazing writer, with a very different story to tell. It reminds me a little of "Like Water for Chocolate", but only in the aspect of connecting the emotions of the cook, to the emotions of the eater. Make sure you have food nearby, as all the detailed food descriptions might leave you famished.
Like nothing you ever read before!

Amazon.com $12
2. The Bad Behavior of Belle Cantrell by Loraine Despres

Synopsis: Set in 1920's Southern America (one of my favorite periods) , Belle is left widowed and struggling to make it in a man's world. Yet she is different from her counterparts, spunky and modern and shocking people at every turn.

Review: Both the emotions of the South and the realities of the time are portrayed through strong characters and a quick-moving storyline. Belle continues to march to her own drum, and is strong and inspiring. I was lost in the world of southern plantations for a week, and when it ended was left wanting to read the story of her whole life!! This book presents conversations about how woman were treated, racial issues and morality. This author also wrote The Scandalous Summer of Sissy Leblanc, which I plan to read and hope it matches up to this fantastic novel.

Love and literature,

The Shoemaker

Atrocious! Are you hot or cold? Make up your mind!

I am on the hunt for the perfect pair of booties...no, not for my baby, but for me! I adore the short ankle boot fashion (a huge step above the bootie-sandal monstrosities of the summer). These styles remind me of something out of "The Elves and the Shoemaker" storybook, but I love them.
So here are a few of my favorites, but I need to pick only one!

http://youravon.com/kerrystead
Avon: $39.99
Pros: Cushion Aire (read:comfy) and suede fabric, and well-priced.
Cons: Don't know how I feel about the heel.

Guess Booties: $138
Pros: Fantastic military style, perfect heel height
Cons: A little pricey

 Victorias Secret: $59
Pros: Flat so great to wear everyday, 3 available colors, cute look.
Con: Not real leather-won't last as long, not suitable for fancier get-up.

Steve Maddden: $43

Pros: Super Cute! and well priced.

Cons: The ruffle limits you to only certain occasions

Forever 21: $27
Pros: Shorter Heel for day-to-night wear, great price!
Cons: Cheap materials

How to wear ankle booties:
  • With miniskirts and dresses
  • With tights
  • With skinny jeans

I will let you know when I find my PERFECT pair- I am still looking for a foldeover ankle bootie with a buckle, preferably in grey.
Love and style,
Kerry, the Momster

PS. Yay for Grey's Anatomy Premier tonight!!

Goodness Gracious, Baked Balls of desire.

I had the great fortune of stumbling onto the most inspiring baking blog about a year ago. I have baked a few items off of here, and still plan to make many more. I can't keep up with all the skilled sugary compositions, as just as I get done making one, there are 3 more I want to create. The blog has an equally cute name to match the darling confections, Bakerella.

I made these delectable cupcake balls, coated in candy, for my daughter's school. I had several people ask me for the recipe, and I also referred them to this site. There are so many ideas on here!- any season or occasion. Try the cake pops too. And now there is even a Cake Pop book.
And some more of Bakerella's creations:
